James A. Garfield
The Works of James A. Garfield: Collected Speeches and Writings
Boston: James R. Osgood, 1882–1883
First Edition · Two Volumes
Published in the immediate aftermath of President James A. Garfield’s assassination in 1881, this handsome two-volume first edition preserves the collected speeches, writings, and public addresses of the 20th President of the United States.
The set is beautifully bound in the publisher’s original three-quarter brown pebbled morocco, featuring elaborately gilt-decorated spines with raised bands, marbled endpapers, and marbled edges. Each volume includes a frontispiece portrait of Garfield.
This is an excellent example of a late 19th-century memorial edition, produced at a moment when the nation was mourning Garfield and reflecting on his brief but influential presidency. The volumes bear early owner ink stamps on the title pages, adding a touch of provenance and history to the copy.
Condition is very good, with only light wear to the attractive publisher’s bindings and slight fading to the spines. The set has been carefully protected with archival covers.
A significant piece of presidential history and an appealing addition to any collection of American political works, presidential biographies, or fine 19th-century bindings.

The Green and Red Planet: A Physiological Study of the Possibility of Life on Mars
Albuquerque: University of New Mexico Press, 1953
Inscribed and Dated by Hubertus Strughold
A fascinating and unusual work at the intersection of space medicine, aviation, and the early scientific study of Mars.
Published in 1953, The Green and Red Planet examines the physiological possibilities of life on Mars and reflects the scientific curiosity surrounding human exploration of space during the early years of the Space Age.
This copy has a particularly interesting association: it is inscribed and dated in German in 1953 by Hubertus Strughold, who came to the United States through Operation Paperclip as a former German scientist with Nazi party affiliations, and is widely known for his pioneering work in aviation and space medicine, to a fellow flight enthusiast in San Antonio, Texas. The contemporary inscription gives this copy a personal connection to the aviation community of the period and makes it considerably more interesting than an ordinary copy of the book.
The book is in very good collectible condition, with a dust jacket showing only minor shelf wear. The jacket is price unclipped and will be protected in a Brodart archival cover.
A compelling copy for collectors of space exploration, aviation history, space medicine, Mars studies, and signed or association copies of twentieth-century scientific works.
